Psychological Therapy

Counselling, psychotherapy and psychological therapy are terms used to describe the same thing: the process of a person engaging with a trained therapist over a period of time to work on achieving their therapeutic goals.

For some people a goal may be to understand themselves better, for some it will be to grow and develop, and for some it will be to address the symptoms of their distress, such as depression, anxiety, frightening thoughts, or trauma reactions.

The psychotherapy process begins with a detailed assessment. Following this the client and the psychologist co-create a psychological formulation which aims to identify the events and experiences that were factors in the development of the client’s current problems and why they have been unable to deal with them. Following this, an individualised evidenced based therapy is developed.

Although some therapies are known better than others, no one therapy has been found to be significantly more effective than any other. The main factor for the achievement of a client’s goals seems to be related to their relationship with the therapist.

The therapeutic approaches that our psychologists are experienced in are:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

  • Schema Therapy
